April 12, 2013
Hello Colleagues!
On behalf of Georgia Aquarium, the Zoological Operations Department
welcomes you to RAW 2013 here in Atlanta.
Whether our fair city is known to you as
The ATL or
Hotlanta, we are excited
you’re here for the 27th annual gathering of professional
aquarists, conservationists and scientists, all of whom will have
great opportunities to learn, network with peers and create new
friendships. The
Aquarium team has been diligently preparing for your time in Atlanta
and we hope that effort is reflected in the general sessions
program, fun evening events and opportunities to get to see our
institution up close and personal.
It wouldn’t be April in Atlanta without a fine, yellow layer of pine
pollen covering every available surface, such as auto vehicles,
outdoor tables, etc.
Let’s hope the weather cooperates this month, with a bit of rain
here and there to wash that pollen away, but with sunny warm skies
most of the time. As
some of you know, Atlanta and the nearby region are rich in American
history sites, especially those associated with the War Between the
States and the Civil Rights Movement.
The Southern Appalachians are regarded by ecologists as the
center of North American aquatic biodiversity.
While you’re in town or traveling through the area, there are
abundant opportunities to experience this history and natural
beauty. Examples include
the Martin Luther
King, Jr. National Historic Site, Zoo Atlanta, The Atlanta Botanical
Garden or, further afield, Tennessee Aquarium.
We urge you to take advantage of these options as time
allows.
However, we’re together here this month primarily to build our
knowledge base, share our experiences and further advance our
overall mission to conserve aquatic resources and help teach others
the importance of doing so.
Of course, we hope to have a little fun along the way.
Again, welcome to RAW 2103.
Have a fantastic week!
